Games (or, Hyde's Night and Tetsu's Morning) [Hyde & Tetsuya]
Title: Games (or, Hyde's Night and Tetsu's Morning)
Fandom: L'Arc~en~Ciel
Characters: Hyde & Tetsuya (friendship)
Rating: G.
Words: 1455
Summary: Tetsuya comes over to visit Hyde while his apartment is being repaired, however, the two of them seem to have very different ideas of what constitutes a "good time". While Tetsuya is perfectly content to work and fill out forms for potential record deals, all Hyde wants to do is play video games.
Author's Note: Written for the prompt "games" for laruku_in_words. I didn't write anything for last month's prompts and I feel so bad about that! So, I was a good girl and wrote this. \(^-^)/
Lately I've been reading a lot of Isaac Asimov-- his short stories are some of my favorites. I really like his writing style, as well as his creative plots, ideas, and particularly, conclusions. I like to think my style's been influenced by his quite a bit. This fic seems to really reflect that-- the plot is obviously nothing like anything he'd write, but the tone is there. Asimov would undoubtedly be off writing more impactful things about the consequences of human space exploration and whatnot. At least, I think this is pretty cute. ^^b
...aaand that's Marie's writing rant for the day! I really like Isaac Asimov's writing style. <3 Maybe someday I'll be awesome and write like he did. ^^ There's always hope!

Hope you enjoy~! Douzo~

There was a sharp division between the rooms- a wall of concrete matter and a wall of ideals. Two separate zones, occupied by one individual each, a moderate balance. The separation was amicable, certainly, once it had been decided upon. Both parties had their goals and philosophies to uphold.

Tetsu had come over for some reason or another. Hyde could not remember what exactly this reason was, though he must have deemed it acceptable at the time. Repairs being implemented on the plumbing system at home, repainting a room, or merely wishing to see Hyde's lovely face for one more time that day-- any of these would have been quite readily approved. Secretly, he told himself it must have been that last one. He liked that one.

Almost immediately, his guest had set up camp upon the main room's carpeted floor, scattering papers about his person as if spreading a blanket. Then, he lay down among them on his stomach, deftly wielding a pen in his slender fingers. The way he had his knees bent, legs crossed at the ankles as they were held elevated over his back, gave him the distinct look of a elementary-school girl signing valentines. His long dyed-red hair, lightly mussed by now by the course of the day, did nothing but contribute to this image.

Hyde sat down at the table a few feet away, gulping down the last remnants of his evening tea. Usually, the sight of Tetsu working like this would make him feel guilty, as if he should be doing something equally productive, but due to the lateness of the hour, Hyde merely decided that Tetsu was being an overeager workaholic again. He rose and headed off to the adjoining room.

From his spot on the floor, the bassist glanced up and fixed the vocalist's retreating back with his penetrating gaze. Hyde had said barely a word since Tetsu had arrived- was something up? This was not allowed to distract him for too long, and in a moment, black-inked lightning struck the paper before him, the bottom now adorned with his signature. It soon found a new home in the 'finished' pile by his elbow.

Then, from the other room where Hyde had sauntered off to, an electronic jingle perked up Tetsu's ears. There was the subtle tap-tap of a joystick's motion, or perhaps the buttons on a controller, he couldn't be quite sure. The silence allowed him to hear this usually inaudible sound, and his lips were temporarily troubled in a frown. Ah, Hyde was playing a game. That was why he had left, and he didn't want to bother Tetsu. How considerate! The bassist smiled faintly, pushed his glasses a little farther up on his nose, and went back to reading.

“Tet-chan!” An unexpected voice called out from the doorway. Tetsu glanced up, blinking away the images of rows and columns of monotonous print to focus on Hyde's face instead. It was lit with a sort of excitement Tetsu wasn't sure he had quite seen before. “Do you wanna play a game with me?”

“A game?” Curiosity flit into his eyes for a moment, and as if it wasn't sure whether this should be displayed or not, his expression seemed confused as to what it was supposed to be. Eventually his features rearranged themselves into an apologetic smile. “I'm sorry, but I really need to finish these. Maybe a little later?”

Hyde huffed and frowned- no, pouted. This only made Tetsu grin. “Cute, but no. I have to play grown-up games right now.” He turned back to his papers, but not for long--

“Why?” Hyde's pout only deepened, to a degree which Tetsu had previously thought to be impossible. Ah, but of course, Hyde could pull it off.

“If I get all of these papers done soon, then we'll get a gig for a big label. Maybe they'll even take us. If we perform for them and they like us, then this could mean something big for the band, you know? But, if I don't have these done, we'll miss the opportunity.” He shrugged and then smiled plainly. “I'm doing this for L'Arc. I'm sure we're going to get somewhere, someday.” On that note, pen struck paper, and he was at once absorbed again.

Hyde sluggishly retreated to his room and started a new game.

Of course he understood why Tetsu was doing this, but for once, couldn't he put himself before the band? It wasn't like these papers had to be done tomorrow. He could wait, and enjoy himself a little bit, for once. It seemed like Tetsu was always working. Couldn't a game with his friend be given a little more importance? If only for just one evening.

From the other room, Tetsu found himself increasingly distracted by the sounds. There was a wall between them, but the door was cracked just enough for him to clearly hear everything. The synthesized sound effects of moving forward in a virtual path-- whoosh of a jump, feet tapping across pavement, slap of hitting a wall and pushing off from it, a spontaneous cry of joy.

Yet, all he could hear was the scratching of his pen across paper, recording ideas, suggestions, and inevitably, his name that marked his approval. Just a few more, he told himself, a little more and you'll make it-- and L'Arc will make it too, in time--

A few hours passed; Hyde had beaten a few levels and was feeling quite proud of his accomplishment. It wasn't every day that he made such progress. He had since changed into more comfortable clothes to sleep in and brushed his teeth, remembering at the last second before getting into bed that his apartment was not otherwise empty.

But, the air was empty-- there was no sound. Ah, but one-- a sigh. Someone sighed.

Hyde tiptoed out into the main room. “Tet-chan?” He ventured in a strained whisper. As he rounded the table, he stopped, and at once could not help but smile. Tetsu was sound asleep, stretched out on the floor as he had been the entire time, pen still held carefully in his fingers. His cheek lay upon an unfinished document, acting as a crinkled and un-supportive pillow.

Once the paper was slipped away and a pillow from the nearby couch supplied in his place, Tetsu gratefully rolled over onto it without even stirring. Hyde lay a blanket over his lanky frame, tucking it close around his friend's chin. Another sigh answered this gesture.

“Sweet dreams.” Hyde murmured, gently patting Tetsu's hair. It was still soft.

Hyde's pillow glowed faintly, an artificial, electronic blue. Then, in a second, a flash of another color-- it flickered to settle upon green, then gold, then green again. The enervating symphony of night sounds had since faded sometime during the course of his slumber-- instead, now, the first thing he heard was a voice, wrought with tension--

“Tahh!” More a sharp breath of irritation than anything else, this was accompanied by a chorus of clicking-- the subtle tap-tap of a joystick's motion, or perhaps the buttons on a controller, he couldn't be quite sure. Hyde grinned into his pillow.

“Ah! Is that so...” That familiar voice muttered, sounding now quite breathy and stressed. “Mou yametara!” He was scolding someone.

Hyde knew these sounds. Things weren't going well, though, by the sounds of it-- still, there was the unmistakable whoosh of a jump, feet tapping across pavement, slap of hitting a wall and pushing off from it, a spontaneous cry of joy. “Yatta!” as the on-screen character apparently stopped 'fooling around'.

Stealthily-- which was rather easy to pull off, as his target was quite distracted-- Hyde crawled across the bed to where a familiar figure was leaned up against it, thoroughly absorbed in his game. The vocalist rest his chin on his hands and merely watched, an absent smile tickling his lips.

The race did not go well, and soon the dismal minor-toned losing music twinkled into the air. The controller was dropped with a sigh. It was then that the defeated turned around and noticed Hyde, regarding him with sparkling dark eyes.

“Hyde!” Tetsu grinned brightly, tossing another controller up onto the bed. “Wanna play a game with me?”

The vocalist was smiling so much, his face was beginning to hurt. Thought you'd never ask. He swallowed his excitement and covered it with a smirk. “Sure. But, if you keep going like that, you're going to lose.” He picked it up and started a new game.

“That was a fluke.” Tetsu insisted adamantly. “I'm going to do better this time. And beat me? I'd like to see you try.”

Hyde was all too happy to oblige.

It's nice to rotate between writing them as lovers or just as friends. Since they work so well either way.

Plus, you can TOTALLY picture this actually happening between them, which is also very cute XD

BTW, are you making references to the Tomarunnner in this?

Why thank youuu~! <3

Yes, yes! You win! \(^-^)/ Since Hyde loves it, I totally pictured that being the game that he'd be playing. Perhaps this is even pre-Tomarunner vs L'Arc! Ahahaha~

This was so, so cute~ I really loved it, especially the ending when Hyde and Tetsu were going to play together <3 I can definitely see this happening in real life too.

There was a sharp division between the rooms- a wall of concrete matter and a wall of ideals. Two separate zones, occupied by one individual each, a moderate balance. The separation was amicable, certainly, once it had been decided upon. Both parties had their goals and philosophies to uphold.

Seriously, your writing is amazing ♥
